Walking with nowhere to go

Caminar sin tener a dónde llegar

We almost always walk to get somewhere. To the car. To a meeting. To the gym. To hit ten thousand steps.

But walking can also exist without a goal. Going out unhurried, without a perfect route and without turning every minute into productivity, can create a small space between us and everything that demands our attention.

Movement helps clear the mind and can support emotional wellbeing; doing it outdoors also adds the change of setting and, when possible, contact with nature.

Sometimes you don't need to get anywhere. You just need to go out for a while.

How to turn it into a ritual

  1. Go out without turning it into a workout. Don't measure pace, distance, or calories. Walk just because.
  2. Leave something at home. Some day, try it without headphones, podcast, or a call. Let the walk have empty spaces.
  3. Look around. A street you never take, the trees, the architecture, the people. Walking can also be a way of learning to observe again.
  4. Head back when you feel it's been enough. You don't need to complete any distance. This walk has no goal to meet.

In closing

There are walks that take you nowhere and, even so, give you something back.
