Why does CBD work differently for everyone?

Two people can take exactly the same amount of CBD and have completely different experiences.

Strange as it may seem, this doesn't mean CBD "works" for one person and "doesn't work" for another. In most cases, it means each body interprets that same molecule from a different biology.

The endocannabinoid system, a signaling network present throughout the body, isn't identical between individuals. Factors such as genetics, age, metabolism, body weight, diet, the use of other medications, and even the way CBD is administered can change the response.

Moreover, CBD doesn't act like a switch that produces an identical effect in everyone. Its function is to interact with multiple biological systems related to the body's internal balance, a process known as homeostasis.

For that reason, current scientific evidence understands CBD as a tool whose effect should be evaluated individually. There is no universal dose, nor an experience that can be considered "normal" for everyone.

The science behind this

An endocannabinoid system as unique as you

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a communication network present in practically the entire body. It takes part in processes related to sleep, mood, pain perception, appetite, the immune response, and many other mechanisms that help maintain internal balance.

Although we all share this system, it doesn't work exactly the same across people. Differences in the number of receptors, the production of endocannabinoids, and the way they're broken down can make the same stimulus generate different responses. CBD doesn't "create" that system: it interacts with it. And since each body has a different biology, the response can also vary.

Genetics is also part of the response

In recent years, pharmacogenetics has begun to study how the natural variations in our genes can influence the response to different medications and bioactive compounds, including cannabinoids. Some genetic differences can alter the activity of enzymes responsible for metabolizing CBD, or modify components of the endocannabinoid system.

This doesn't mean there's a "CBD gene," nor that we can today predict precisely who will respond best. Even so, the evidence suggests that genetics is one of the pieces that help explain the variability between individuals. It's a promising field of research, though still developing.

We don't all metabolize CBD the same way

After being administered, CBD must be absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and finally eliminated from the body. Each of these stages can vary considerably between people. Factors such as liver function, the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, diet, or the simultaneous use of other medications can change the speed at which the body processes CBD.

In other words, two people can take exactly the same dose and still reach different concentrations in the blood. That's why dose alone doesn't explain the whole experience.

Age and biological sex can also play a role

The body changes constantly throughout life. During childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging, physiological changes occur that affect how we absorb and metabolize many substances. In addition, some research suggests that hormonal differences between men and women could influence the response to cannabinoids, though this remains a topic under study. This doesn't mean there's a dose "for men" and another "for women," but rather that individual biology matters.

The route of administration changes the experience

Taking a capsule isn't the same as using a sublingual oil. Each route of administration determines how much CBD reaches circulation, how quickly its effect appears, and how long it stays active. Even a meal rich in fats can change the absorption of orally administered CBD. That's why comparing experiences between people without considering how they used the product can lead to mistaken conclusions.

So is there a perfect dose?

So far, scientific evidence doesn't support a single dose that works for everyone. The response depends on multiple biological variables that interact with one another. For that reason, many clinical protocols tend to recommend starting with low doses and increasing them gradually when appropriate, always observing the individual response and considering the guidance of a health professional when a specific medical condition exists.

More than finding a "correct" amount for everyone, the goal is to identify the dose that turns out to be right for each body.

What we know today

The evidence supports fairly solidly that:

  • The endocannabinoid system shows variations between individuals.
  • The pharmacokinetics of CBD change from one person to another.
  • Age, metabolism, and route of administration can change the response.
  • The response to CBD should be understood from individual biology and not from a universal expectation.

What is still being researched

  • The specific impact of certain genetic variants.
  • Biomarkers that make it possible to predict the response to CBD.
  • Personalized-medicine strategies applied to cannabinoids.
  • The influence of other biological and environmental factors on the individual response.

Conclusion

The right question isn't whether CBD works the same for everyone. The right question is why we would expect it to. Each body has a different biological history: the genes, the metabolism, the age, the diet, the medications, and the workings of the endocannabinoid system all change.
