Recovery is also part of training

Training is the stimulus. Recovering is where much of the adaptation happens.

During exercise we put the body under stress: we use energy reserves, generate fatigue, and demand a lot from muscles, joints, and the nervous system. But the body needs time after that effort to repair tissues, recover resources, and adapt to the demands it has just experienced.

That's why training more doesn't always mean progressing more. When there's enough recovery, the body can adapt to the stimulus and be better prepared to face it again. When we accumulate effort without allowing that recovery, performance can stall and fatigue can build up.

Sleeping, eating properly, staying hydrated, and scheduling lower-intensity days aren't interruptions to training. They're part of it.

Progress doesn't happen only when you're training. It also happens when you give your body the chance to respond to everything you've just demanded of it.

What this means for your wellbeing

There's a training principle known as adaptation. After a demanding session, our performance can temporarily decline due to fatigue. During recovery, the body works to repair and replenish what it used during the effort. With enough time and the right stimuli, those adaptations are precisely what allow improvement.

It's one of the reasons a smart program alternates effort and recovery rather than demanding maximum intensity every day. And recovering doesn't necessarily mean staying still: walking, doing mobility work, light exercise, or simply lowering the intensity can be part of active recovery, depending on the training and each person's needs.

The less spectacular pillars of performance also matter: sleep, nutrition, hydration, and managing training load. None of them produces the immediate satisfaction of finishing a hard session. Yet all of them help create the conditions needed to be able to train again.

The goal, then, shouldn't be to accumulate as many workouts as possible. It should be to find a rhythm in which effort and recovery can coexist. Because demanding effort from the body is one part of progress. Giving it time to adapt is the other.

One idea to remember

Rest doesn't interrupt training. It completes it.
